The number printed on your tyre sidewall is a maximum. It is a safety limit, not a recommendation, and treating it as a target is the single most common reason riders are uncomfortable and slower than they need to be.
Correct pressure depends on how much weight the tyre is carrying and how wide it is. Get those right and you get better grip, fewer punctures, a smoother ride and, on Indian roads, genuinely more speed.

Why this matters more than it sounds
Too low and the tyre squirms in corners, the rim is exposed to impacts, and you get pinch flats. Too high and the tyre stops absorbing the road surface and starts bouncing off it. Every bounce is energy that went into vibrating you instead of moving you forward.
That second point is the one most riders have never been told. Above a certain pressure on a rough surface, going harder makes you slower, not faster.
There is a name for the moment it flips. Silca, who have done more published testing on this than anyone, call it the breakpoint pressure: the point at which surface impedance starts raising rolling resistance faster than higher pressure reduces it. Below the breakpoint, more air makes you quicker. Above it, more air makes you slower and more uncomfortable at the same time.
On smooth tarmac that breakpoint is high. On a typical Indian road it arrives much sooner than people expect. The old advice of 110 to 120 psi on a 23mm tyre came from an era of narrower tyres, tubes and different rims, and it sits a long way above the breakpoint for most of the roads any of us actually ride.
Start with these two numbers
Your system weight. Not just you. You, plus the bike, plus everything on it. A road bike is around 8 to 9kg, and with bottles, a saddle bag, tools and whatever is in your pockets you are usually adding 10 to 11kg to your own weight.
Your tyre width. Printed on the sidewall, usually as 700x25c, 700x28c and so on.

Look along your row and notice how much the number drops as the tyre gets wider. A 75kg rider moving from 25c to 32c goes from around 90 psi to around 60. That is not a small adjustment, and it is why people who fit wider tyres and keep pumping them to their old pressure end up wondering what the fuss was about.

It assumes a typical modern rim and an average road surface, and it cannot account for the fact that the same tyre measures wider on a wider rim and therefore wants less pressure.

Rim internal width is worth measuring properly. A 28c tyre on a 19mm internal rim and the same tyre on a 25mm internal rim are effectively different tyres, and the wider setup wants noticeably less pressure. Wheels have got wider over the last decade and a lot of riders are running pressures calculated for rims they no longer own.
One caveat Silca make themselves, and it matters here. The calculator finds the fastest pressure, which is not always the best pressure. On loose, wet or very broken surfaces the limiting factor stops being rolling resistance and becomes grip. When that is true you want to go below what the calculator says. Monsoon riding on Indian roads is exactly that situation.
Front and rear are not the same
Roughly 40 percent of your weight sits on the front wheel and 60 percent on the rear, so the front tyre is carrying less and should run lower.
Run the front 5 to 10 psi below the rear. On a 28c at 75 psi rear, that means around 67 to 70 front. The Silca calculator gives you separate front and rear figures for exactly this reason.
This is worth doing properly. Most of your grip in a corner comes from the front tyre, and a front tyre at the same pressure as the rear is over-inflated for the load it carries. Riders who drop the front for the first time usually describe the bike as feeling more planted, which is precisely what is happening.
Tubeless or tubes changes the answer
Tubeless setups can run lower because the main risk of low pressure, the pinch flat, largely disappears. There is no tube to crush between the rim and an obstruction.
With tubes, add 5 to 8 psi to the table above. That margin is protection against pinch flats rather than performance, and on roads with sharp-edged potholes it is a real constraint rather than a conservative one.

The monsoon adjustment is worth taking seriously. A slightly softer tyre puts more rubber on the road, and on a wet Indian road with painted markings, diesel patches and loose grit, that grip matters far more than a marginal speed difference.
How to check it properly
You need a gauge. Thumb pressure tells you almost nothing above about 40 psi, and most riders who check by feel are running 15 to 20 psi below what they think.
Worth knowing that gauges are not all equal either. Floor pump gauges can be out by up to 5 psi, which is enough to matter once you are running the lower pressures a wide tyre wants. If you have dialled in a number you trust, use the same gauge every time so at least you are consistent.
A floor pump with a gauge is the practical answer for home use. The Topeak JoeBlow Sport Digital gives you a digital readout rather than a dial you have to squint at, which matters more once you are running the lower pressures a wide tyre wants. For a hand pump you can carry that also reads pressure, the Giyo GM-71 has a gauge built in, which is more useful than it sounds when you have just changed a tube at the roadside and are guessing.
An electric mini pump solves this differently. You set a target pressure, it inflates to that number and stops. If you struggle to remember to check, something that makes it a twenty second job tends to actually get used.
Check before every ride, not once a week. A road tyre loses meaningful pressure in three or four days simply sitting there. Latex tubes and tubeless setups lose it faster.
Finding your own number
Whether you start from the table or the calculator, treat the result as a starting point rather than a verdict. Your ideal pressure depends on your roads, your riding and what you like.
Ride a route you know well. Then change one thing at a time, 5 psi at a time, and pay attention to two things: does the bike feel harsh and skittery over rough sections, and does it feel vague or squirmy when you push into a corner.
Harsh and skittery means too high. Vague and squirmy means too low. Somewhere between the two is your number, and once you find it, write it down.
