Hardtail or full suspension

This is the decision that matters most, and the one most often got wrong.

A hardtail has front suspension only. At any given price it carries better components than a full suspension bike costing the same, because rear suspension is expensive and eats the budget. It is lighter, needs less maintenance and climbs better. For cross-country riding, fire roads and the trails most Indian riders actually have access to, it is the right answer. 29 inch or 27.5 inch wheels

29 inch rolls over rocks and roots more easily and holds speed better, which is why it dominates cross-country. 27.5 inch accelerates quicker and turns more sharply in tight terrain, and often suits shorter riders better.
