Tyre and Rim Width Compatibility: What Fits Your Wheels

Short answer: a tyre must be at least 1.4 times the internal width of the rim and no more than about 2.5 times it. A 21mm internal rim, which is now typical on road bikes, takes tyres from 28mm to 52mm and should not be run with a 25mm tyre. Hookless rims add a hard ceiling of 72.5 psi and a minimum tyre width of 28mm.

Measure internal width, not external

Every compatibility rule on this page uses the internal rim width, measured between the inner faces of the two rim walls where the tyre bead sits. External width includes the rim walls themselves and is typically 4 to 6mm wider. Using the external figure will put you one or two sizes out.

If the rim is not marked, deflate and remove the tyre and measure across the rim bed with a vernier caliper or a steel rule. Most modern rims are marked, usually on the inner rim bed or on the manufacturer's specification page.

Rim widths have grown considerably. A road rim from 2015 was commonly 15mm to 17mm internal. Current road rims are 19mm to 23mm, which is why 28mm and 30mm tyres have become standard rather than an endurance option.

Rim width to tyre width chart

The widely used guidance is that tyre width should fall between 1.4 and 2.5 times the internal rim width. Below the minimum the tyre profile becomes light-bulb shaped and unstable at low pressure. Above the maximum the tyre can roll on the rim in hard cornering and the bead is less secure.

Treat the extremes as limits rather than targets. On a 21mm internal rim, the sweet spot for road riding on Indian surfaces is 30mm to 32mm rather than either end of the range.

Hookless rims: the rules are different

Hookless rims have straight vertical walls with no lip curling inward over the tyre bead. They are now common on carbon road and gravel wheels. Three constraints apply and none of them is optional.

The 72.5 psi ceiling comes from the ISO standard and exists because there is no hook to retain the bead under pressure. Exceeding it risks the tyre blowing off the rim. In practice this is rarely a limitation, because a 30mm tyre on a wide rim should be run well below that figure anyway. It only bites if you are a heavy rider on a narrow tyre trying to use old pressure habits.

Check the wheel manufacturer's approved tyre list before buying. It is a specific list, not a general category, and a tyre being tubeless ready does not mean it is hookless approved.

Reading ETRTO markings

ETRTO is the sizing system that actually tells you whether something fits. It appears on the tyre sidewall as two numbers separated by a dash.

Tyre marked 32-622: 32mm nominal width, 622mm bead seat diameter.

Rim marked 622x21C: 622mm bead seat diameter, 21mm internal width.

The second number is the one that determines whether a tyre will physically mount. It must match between tyre and rim.

Note that 700c and 29 inch are the same 622mm bead seat. A 29 inch MTB tyre will mount on a 700c gravel rim provided the frame has clearance and the rim width suits. The names differ for historical reasons, not technical ones.

Why your 28mm tyre measures 30mm

The number on the sidewall is measured on a reference rim specified by the manufacturer, usually a narrow one. Mount the same tyre on a wider rim and it sits wider.

The working rule is that tyre width increases by roughly 0.4mm for every 1mm of extra internal rim width beyond the reference rim.

A 28mm tyre measured on a 17mm reference rim will measure close to 30mm on a 21mm rim and around 31mm on a 23mm rim. This matters for two reasons: it can take you past your frame clearance without you having changed tyre size, and it means the tyre you actually have is wider and more comfortable than the label suggests.

Always measure the fitted tyre with a caliper after mounting rather than trusting the sidewall, especially if clearance is tight.

Frame and fork clearance

Rim compatibility only tells you the tyre will mount safely. The frame decides whether it will turn.

Manufacturers state a maximum tyre width, and that figure already includes a safety margin. The generally accepted minimum is 4mm of clearance on each side and above the tyre, measured at the tightest point, which is usually the chainstay bridge or the fork crown.

In Indian conditions there is an argument for more than 4mm rather than less. Monsoon riding packs mud and grit into the chainstay area, and a tyre that clears in the dry can rub when loaded with wet debris. If you ride through the wet season, leave 6mm where you can.

Check clearance with the wheel properly seated in the dropouts, not hanging in the frame, and spin it. A tyre that clears when stationary can still rub when the wheel flexes under load.

Matching a tube to the tyre

Tubes are sold in ranges, and the range must contain your tyre width.

  • Use the range, not the nearest number. A tube marked 700x25-32c suits any tyre from 25mm to 32mm. A tube stretched beyond its range is thin and puncture prone; one bunched below its range folds and pinches.
  • Valve length must exceed rim depth by at least 15mm. A 45mm rim needs a 60mm valve as a minimum, a 60mm rim needs 80mm.
  • Presta is standard on road and most modern bikes. Schrader appears on entry-level hybrids and MTBs. The rim's valve hole determines which fits, and a Presta valve in a Schrader hole needs an adaptor grommet or it will tear.

Tubes sit in tubes, tyres in tyres, and if you are converting a wheelset, rim tape and tubeless valves.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put a 25mm tyre on a 21mm internal rim?

No, not safely. A 21mm internal rim needs a minimum of 28mm. Below 1.4 times the internal width the tyre takes on a light-bulb profile, with the casing bulging wider than the rim before curving back in. That shape is unstable in hard cornering, puts unusual stress on the bead, and defeats the aerodynamic and comfort reasons for a wide rim. If your wheels are 21mm internal, start at 28mm.

Will a 29 inch MTB tyre fit a 700c gravel wheel?

Yes, mechanically. Both use a 622mm bead seat diameter and the names are historical rather than technical. The two limits are rim width and frame clearance. A 2.1 inch MTB tyre is roughly 53mm, which needs at least a 21mm internal rim and a frame that clears it. Most gravel frames top out around 45mm to 50mm, so check clearance before ordering.

How do I know if my rims are hookless?

Remove the tyre and look at the rim wall in profile. A hooked rim has a small lip curling inward at the top of each wall, over where the bead sits. A hookless rim has straight vertical walls with no lip at all, meeting the bead shelf at a right angle. If you cannot tell, check the manufacturer's specification page, because the pressure limit and approved tyre list depend on the answer.

Does a wider tyre always roll slower?

No, and on real road surfaces the opposite is often true. Wider tyres run at lower pressure and absorb surface irregularities that would otherwise lift and decelerate the bike, which is called suspension loss. On smooth laboratory drums narrow and high pressure wins, but on patched tarmac and chip seal a 30mm tyre at lower pressure usually rolls faster than a 25mm at high pressure. Aerodynamic drag rises with width, which is why very wide tyres are still slower at high speed.

Can I use a tubeless tyre with an inner tube inside it?

Yes on a hooked rim, and it is a normal roadside fix. Remove the tubeless valve first, pull out any plugs, and wipe wet sealant from the inside of the casing. On hookless rims most manufacturers advise against running tube type setups at all, so check the wheel documentation. A tube inside a tubeless tyre is a way home rather than a permanent arrangement, because trapped sealant degrades the tube over time.
