Pedal and Cleat Compatibility: Which Cleats Fit Your Pedals?

Short answer: cleats are specific to a pedal system, not to a brand of shoe. Road pedals use a three-bolt cleat, mountain and gravel pedals use a two-bolt cleat, and the two are not interchangeable. Shimano SPD-SL and Look Keo both bolt to the same three-bolt shoe pattern but their cleats and pedals will not work together.

Two-bolt, three-bolt and four-bolt

Compatibility starts at the sole of the shoe. Turn the shoe over and count the threaded holes.

The practical difference is walking. A three-bolt road cleat is a plastic wedge sitting below the sole, so you walk on the cleat itself and it wears every time you do. A two-bolt cleat sits inside a recess with rubber tread around it, so you walk on the shoe.

Many road shoes now come drilled for both patterns, which lets you run SPD on a road shoe. Check the sole before assuming.

The two-bolt column is more forgiving than the three-bolt one. SPD has effectively become a standard, and generic two-bolt cleats work in SPD pedals. Crankbrothers and Time ATAC are exceptions and need their own cleats despite using the same two-bolt shoe mounting.

SPD-SL and Look Keo: why they do not mix

This is the single most common mistake, and it is understandable. Both are three-bolt road systems, both use a triangular plastic cleat, and both bolt to the identical hole pattern on the shoe. They look close enough that people buy the wrong one.

They are not interchangeable. The cleat bodies differ in shape, thickness and in how the front tip engages the pedal. A Keo cleat will not lock into an SPD-SL pedal and an SPD-SL cleat will not lock into a Keo pedal.

Two ways to tell them apart:

  • The SPD-SL cleat is larger, with a broad triangular platform and a distinctive squared-off rear.
  • The Keo cleat is smaller and narrower, with a more pointed front and a narrower rear tab.

If you are replacing worn cleats and cannot remember which system you have, look at the pedal rather than the cleat. Shimano SPD-SL pedals carry Shimano branding and a wide black body. Look Keo pedals are branded Look and have a narrower body.

Third-party cleats are made for both, and they are considerably cheaper than the originals. SPD-SL compatible and Keo compatible versions are both stocked, alongside genuine Shimano SPD-SL and Look cleats. Buy for the system you have, not the shoe you own.

Float and what the cleat colours mean

Float is how far your heel can rotate before the cleat releases. Too little float on a rider who needs it causes knee pain. Too much feels vague and can waste effort at high power.

Start with the higher float option unless a bike fitter has told you otherwise. Zero float is not a performance upgrade, it is a fit decision that assumes your cleat position is already exactly right.

SPD cleats: SH51 or SH56

Shimano makes two SPD cleats and they behave very differently. They look nearly identical and are frequently sold interchangeably, which causes problems.

  • SM-SH51, single release. Releases only when you twist your heel outward. Secure, predictable, and the correct choice for most riding.
  • SM-SH56, multi release. Releases with an outward twist or by pulling upward and in several other directions. Easier to escape in a panic, but it can release unintentionally under hard pedalling out of the saddle.

SH56 suits nervous beginners and technical mountain biking where a fast foot down matters. SH51 suits everything else. If you have ever pulled out of a pedal unexpectedly while sprinting, check which cleat you are running.

When to replace a cleat

Worn cleats are a crash risk, not just an annoyance. Replace when any of these appear:

  • You have to twist noticeably further than usual to release.
  • The foot releases when you did not want it to, particularly out of the saddle.
  • There is play or a rocking feeling when clipped in on a pedal you know is not worn.
  • The wear indicator, on cleats that have one, has worn through.
  • The front tip has visibly thinned or rounded off.

Check the pedal too. If new cleats still feel loose, the pedal body or its retention spring may be worn, and no cleat will fix that.

What Indian conditions do to cleats

Cleat life here is shorter than the figures quoted in European reviews, for three reasons.

  • Dust and grit act as an abrasive. Road dust gets between cleat and pedal on every engagement, and it grinds. This is the main cause of accelerated wear.
  • Walking surfaces are harsher. Rough concrete, kerbstones and gravel forecourts take material off a road cleat far faster than a smooth cafe floor.
  • Monsoon water carries grit into the mechanism and washes lubricant out of the pedal spring.

Three practical responses. Fit cleat covers and use them whenever you walk more than a few steps, because they cost a fraction of a cleat. Rinse and dry pedals after wet rides rather than leaving grit in the retention mechanism. And check cleat wear every couple of months rather than waiting for a symptom.

If you walk regularly during rides, a two-bolt SPD setup on a gravel or touring shoe is worth considering over a road system. It costs a little efficiency and returns a great deal of convenience and cleat life.

Frequently asked questions

How long do road cleats last?

Between 3,000 and 8,000 km for a three-bolt road cleat, and the range is that wide because walking, not riding, is what wears them. A rider who clips out at traffic lights and stands on the cleat will get through a set in a season, while one who rarely puts a foot down can double that. Two-bolt SPD cleats are metal and last considerably longer, often several years, because the shoe tread takes the walking load instead.

Can I fit SPD cleats to road shoes?

Only if the sole is drilled for two bolts, and many road shoes are not. Check the sole for a second pair of threaded holes behind or within the three-bolt pattern. Where they exist, an SPD cleat bolts straight on, though it will sit proud rather than recessed because road soles have no tread recess, so walking is still awkward. Three-bolt to two-bolt adaptor plates exist but they raise stack height and add a failure point.

Do I need different cleats for indoor trainer riding?

No, the same pedals and cleats work on a trainer, since the bike is unchanged. What is worth doing is using an older set of cleats indoors if you have them, because sweat is corrosive to pedal springs and bolt heads. Riders who train indoors heavily often fit a second pair of pedals to a dedicated trainer bike, and SPD is the common choice because clipping in and out repeatedly is easier.

What torque should cleat bolts be, and why do they keep loosening?

Five to six newton metres for most cleat bolts, and they loosen because pedalling applies constant rotational load in both directions. Use a torque wrench rather than guessing, since overtightening strips the threaded plate inside the sole, which is a repair most shoes do not survive. A drop of medium strength threadlock helps. Check the bolts every few weeks, because a cleat that shifts mid-ride changes your knee alignment without you noticing.

Can I use one pedal system across all my bikes?

Yes, and it is the sensible approach if you ride multiple bikes with the same shoes. Buy pedals of the same system for each bike rather than swapping one pair between them, because repeated removal wears the crank threads and a cross-threaded pedal ruins a crank arm. If your bikes serve different purposes, road and gravel for instance, running SPD-SL on one and SPD on the other means two pairs of shoes, which is the usual compromise.
