Disc Rotor Standards: Centerlock, 6-Bolt, Sizes and Adapters

Short answer: three separate questions get confused here. How the rotor attaches to the hub (6-bolt or Centerlock), how big the rotor is (140, 160, 180 or 203mm), and how the calliper attaches to the frame (flat mount, post mount or IS). They are independent. You need all three answers before ordering anything.

The three independent questions

Almost every ordering mistake here comes from treating disc brake compatibility as one question when it's three.

A Centerlock hub with a 160mm rotor on a flat mount frame is an entirely normal combination. So is a 6-bolt hub with a 180mm rotor on a post mount frame. The three don't constrain each other.

Neither is better in braking terms. Centerlock is quicker to work on and slightly lighter; 6-bolt is simpler and needs only a Torx key, which you probably already carry. The road market has drifted heavily towards Centerlock over the past decade.

One detail worth knowing about Centerlock: there are two lockring types. Internal-spline lockrings use a cassette lockring tool. External-spline lockrings use a bottom bracket tool, and exist because on 15mm and 20mm thru-axle hubs the axle is too fat for the internal tool to fit over. How to tell which you have

Look at the hub where the rotor sits.

  • Six small bolt heads in a circle around the hub flange — 6-bolt.
  • A splined boss with a threaded ring, no visible bolts — Centerlock.

If the rotor is off, a 6-bolt hub shows six threaded holes; a Centerlock hub shows a splined cylinder.

Converting between them

This only works in one direction, which catches people out.

So if you have Centerlock hubs you can run either rotor type. If you have 6-bolt hubs you are limited to 6-bolt rotors, and that is worth remembering when buying wheels rather than after.

For the workable direction, the Alligator Center Lock adapter with ring takes a 6-bolt rotor onto a Centerlock hub. Shimano's SM-RTAD05 does the same job.

Rotor sizes

A larger rotor gives more braking torque for the same lever force, because the calliper acts further from the axle. It also sheds heat better, which matters more than outright power on a long descent — an overheated brake fades whatever its size.

The cost is weight and, on the front, slightly more of a lever effect through the fork.

Common setups. Road: 160 front, 140 rear. Gravel: 160 both. Cross-country: 180 front, 160 rear. Trail: 180 or 203 front, 180 rear.

For riding in India specifically, err upwards if you ride hills with any regularity or carry weight. Heat management on a long descent in warm conditions is the argument for a bigger front rotor, not braking power on the flat.

Calliper mount standards

This is set by your frame and fork and cannot be changed, only adapted.

Flat mount is the tidiest and is now near-universal on drop-bar disc bikes. Its quirk is asymmetry: the rear calliper bolts straight to the frame for a 140mm rotor and needs an adapter to run 160mm, while the front calliper always mounts to the fork through an adapter, with the adapter determining rotor size.

Post mount is more forgiving — the frame or fork has a base size and stacking an adapter steps you up.

Adapter lookup

Adapters move the calliper outward to clear a larger rotor. They are specific to mount type, to front or rear, and to the size step.

Shimano's adapter naming decodes usefully: F or R for front or rear, the number for the rotor size, then two letters for the mount type at each end — P for post, S for standard, D for flat mount. So SM-MA-R160D/D is a rear adapter for a 160mm rotor, flat mount to flat mount.

Check your frame's maximum. Manufacturers specify a largest permitted rotor, and exceeding it puts loads through the mount and the fork that they were not designed for. This is a safety limit, not a suggestion.

Rotor thickness and wear

Rotors wear thin and must be replaced when they do. A rotor below its minimum thickness can crack or fail under heat.

The minimum is usually laser-etched on the rotor itself. Measure with a caliper or a rotor gauge at several points around the braking track, since wear is rarely even.

Always fit new pads with a new rotor. Old pads have bedded to the wear pattern of the old rotor and will bed poorly, which shows up as weak braking and noise that never fully goes away.

Bed new pads and rotors in properly: ten to fifteen progressive stops from moderate speed, slowing but not fully stopping, letting the brake cool between. Skipping this is the most common cause of a new setup feeling weaker than the old one.

Common mistakes

Assuming a Centerlock rotor fits a 6-bolt hub. The adapter only works the other way.

Ordering a rotor without checking size. Your frame and adapter set the size. A 180mm rotor on a mount configured for 160mm will not clear the calliper.

Buying an adapter without specifying front or rear. They are not the same part, and on flat mount the difference is substantial.

Contaminating a new rotor. Handle by the spider, not the braking surface. Fingerprint oil is enough to cause squeal that then needs cleaning off.

Reusing old pads with a new rotor. Bed them together or accept mediocre braking.

Exceeding the frame's maximum rotor size. Larger is not automatically better, and beyond the stated limit it is a structural risk.

What is the difference between 6-bolt and Centerlock?

How the rotor attaches to the hub. 6-bolt uses six M5 bolts on a 44mm circle and a T25 Torx key. Centerlock uses a splined interface secured by a lockring, fitted with a cassette lockring tool or bottom bracket tool. Braking performance is identical; Centerlock is faster to work on, 6-bolt needs simpler tools.

Can I fit a 6-bolt rotor on a Centerlock hub?

Yes, using an adapter that splines onto the Centerlock hub and presents a 6-bolt pattern. This works reliably and is a common setup.

Can I fit a Centerlock rotor on a 6-bolt hub?

No. There is no practical adapter for that direction. If your hubs are 6-bolt you are limited to 6-bolt rotors.

What rotor size do I need?

Whatever your frame and fork mount, plus adapter, is configured for. Road bikes commonly run 160mm front and 140mm rear, gravel 160mm both, mountain bikes 180mm or larger. Check your frame's stated maximum before going bigger.

What is flat mount and how is it different from post mount?

Flat mount bolts the calliper up through the frame from below and is the road and gravel standard since around 2015. Post mount bolts parallel to the axle into threaded posts and is the mountain bike standard. They are not interchangeable without an adapter.

Do I need an adapter for a bigger rotor?

Almost always. The adapter moves the calliper outward so it sits over the larger rotor. Adapters are specific to mount type, front or rear, and the size step, so all three need to match.

When should I replace a disc rotor?

When it reaches minimum thickness, usually 1.5mm for Shimano and 1.55mm for SRAM against 1.8mm and 1.85mm new. The minimum is normally etched on the rotor. Also replace if it is badly warped, cracked, or contaminated beyond cleaning.

Do I need new pads when I fit a new rotor?

Yes. Old pads have bedded to the old rotor's wear pattern and will bed poorly to a new surface, giving weak braking and persistent noise. Fit both together and bed them in with ten to fifteen progressive stops.
