Read more: choosing between road, gravel, hybrid and mountain, and getting the size right

Which type of bike suits your riding?

Road bikes suit sealed surfaces and distance. Hybrids handle commuting and rough city roads with an upright, comfortable position. Gravel bikes take drop bars off-road and cope with broken tarmac and dirt tracks. Mountain bikes are for trails and genuinely broken surfaces, not just bad tarmac.

What should you spend?

An entry-level hybrid or mountain bike covers commuting and fitness well. A capable alloy or entry carbon road bike with a reliable groupset is where most serious first road bikes sit. Above that you are paying for frame material, groupset tier and wheels, and the gains get smaller as the price climbs. Decide what and where you will ride first, then set your budget.

Which size frame do you need?

Frame size is the one thing you cannot fix later with parts. Sizing differs between manufacturers, so a 54 in one brand is not a 54 in another, and each model page links its own size chart with the exact height ranges. Reach and stack matter more than the number on the label. If you are between two sizes, your flexibility and riding position should decide, not the chart alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I look for in a first road bike?

Look for a reliable alloy or entry carbon frame with a recognised groupset that shifts properly and can be serviced anywhere, plus disc brakes if your routes are wet or hilly. Avoid stretching for a compromised road bike at the bottom of the market: if your budget is tight, a good hybrid is usually the better first bike.

Should I buy a gravel bike or a road bike?

Choose a road bike if you ride mainly on sealed surfaces and care about speed and distance. Choose gravel if a meaningful part of your riding is on broken roads, farm tracks or trails, since the wider tyre clearance and more relaxed geometry make that far more comfortable. A gravel bike with faster tyres also handles road rides well.

How do I choose the right frame size?

Start with the size chart on the specific model page, since sizing is not consistent between brands and a 54 in one is not a 54 in another. Height gives you a starting point, but reach and stack determine how the bike actually fits. If you fall between two sizes, your flexibility and intended riding position should decide which way to go.

Should I buy a hybrid or a mountain bike?

Buy a hybrid if most of your riding is on roads, including broken city tarmac, for commuting or fitness: it is lighter, faster and more comfortable over distance. Buy a mountain bike if you will genuinely ride trails, dirt tracks or rocky terrain, where suspension, wider tyres and lower gearing make the real difference.

Should I buy a complete bike or a frameset?

Most riders should buy a complete bike: the components are matched, it arrives ready to ride, and it usually costs less than building the same specification from parts. A frameset makes sense if you want a custom build, are transferring a groupset and wheels from another bike, or have very specific component preferences.
