Mountain Bikes

(57 products)

Hardtail and full-suspension mountain bikes for cross-country, trail and weekend riding. Most riders here are better served by a well-specified hardtail than a cheap full suspension bike, and we will say so.

Hardtail or full suspension

This is the decision that matters most, and the one most often got wrong.

A hardtail has front suspension only. At any given price it carries better components than a full suspension bike costing the same, because rear suspension is expensive and eats the budget. It is lighter, needs less maintenance and climbs better. For cross-country riding, fire roads and the trails most Indian riders actually have access to, it is the right answer, and a carbon hardtail is the classic choice for cross-country racing.

Full suspension earns its place on genuinely technical, rocky descents. Short-travel trail bikes are the sensible entry point, with longer-travel bikes built for steep, rough terrain and bike park riding.

29 inch or 27.5 inch wheels

29 inch rolls over rocks and roots more easily and holds speed better, which is why it dominates cross-country. 27.5 inch accelerates quicker and turns more sharply in tight terrain, and often suits shorter riders better. Some models are offered in both wheel sizes, so you can choose by preference and fit.

How much to spend

Spend enough to get hydraulic disc brakes and an air-sprung fork: that is the point where a hardtail will genuinely handle trails. Below it you are often buying something that looks like a mountain bike rather than one built to be ridden off-road, with a heavy coil fork and mechanical brakes that suit park paths better than singletrack. If the budget is fixed, prioritise a good fork and brakes over a higher gear count.

Sizing

Frame sizes run S to XL and map roughly to height, but reach differs between brands and matters more than the letter on the label. Check the size chart for the specific model. If you are between sizes, the smaller frame is usually easier to handle on technical ground.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I buy a hardtail or full suspension mountain bike?

Buy a hardtail unless you are riding genuinely technical trails regularly. A hardtail at a given price has better components than a full suspension bike at the same price, because the rear suspension eats the budget. It is also lighter, climbs better and needs less maintenance, while full suspension earns its place on rocky, technical descents.

Is 29 inch or 27.5 inch better for mountain biking?

29 inch wheels roll over obstacles more easily and carry speed better, which suits cross-country riding and most Indian trails. 27.5 inch accelerates faster and feels more manoeuvrable in tight terrain, and suits shorter riders who find a 29er awkward. Some models are offered in both wheel sizes, so you can choose by fit and feel.

How much should I spend on a mountain bike in India?

Spend enough to get hydraulic disc brakes and an air-sprung fork, which is the point where a hardtail will handle real trails. Cheaper bikes with heavy coil forks and mechanical brakes look the part but suit park paths better than singletrack. Full suspension costs considerably more for equivalent components, so budget accordingly if you need it.

What size mountain bike frame do I need?

Mountain bike sizing runs S to XL and maps roughly to rider height, but reach matters more than the label and differs between brands. Check the size chart for the specific model, and if you are between sizes the smaller frame is usually more manageable on technical terrain.

Can I use a mountain bike for daily commuting?

Yes, though it is not the efficient choice. Knobbly tyres are slow and noisy on tarmac and suspension absorbs pedalling effort. If most of your riding is on roads with occasional rough sections, a hybrid or gravel bike will be faster and more comfortable for the same money.
