Seatpost Diameters and Setback: What Fits Your Frame?

Short answer: seatpost diameter must match your frame exactly, and the common sizes are 27.2mm, 30.9mm and 31.6mm. A 0.7mm error is the difference between a post that holds and one that slips or cracks the frame. Setback is a separate choice that shifts your saddle backwards, and many modern frames take a proprietary post that fits nothing else.

Diameter, the number that must be exact

Unlike most bicycle standards, seatposts come in a long list of sizes separated by fractions of a millimetre. There is no rounding and no near enough.

27.2mm is favoured on road frames for a reason. A narrower post flexes more, and that flex is real comfort over broken tarmac. A frame designed around 27.2 is often more comfortable than the same frame built for a fatter post, which is why endurance and gravel frames stick with it.

The dangerous errors are the close ones. Fitting a 30.9 post into a 31.6 frame gives 0.7mm of slop: the post will slip no matter how hard you tighten the clamp, and overtightening to compensate is how seat tubes crack.

How to find your size

Three approaches, in order of reliability.

  1. Read the post. Most seatposts have the diameter printed or engraved near the bottom, below the minimum insertion mark. Easiest and most reliable.
  2. Measure with a vernier caliper. Remove the post and measure its outer diameter, not the seat tube. Measure at two points and take the larger reading, since a slipping post can be marked where the clamp gripped it.
  3. Use a seat tube gauge. A stepped tool such as the IceToolz seat tube gauge drops into the frame and reads the size directly. This is what to use when the old post is missing or unmarked.

Do not guess from the frame manufacturer's website alone. Frames of the same model frequently changed seatpost diameter between model years.

Seatpost diameter is not clamp diameter

This trips up a surprising number of people ordering parts.

  • Seatpost diameter is the outside of the post, and the inside of the seat tube. For example 27.2mm.
  • Seatpost clamp diameter is the outside of the seat tube, which is larger by twice the tube wall thickness. Common clamp sizes are 28.6mm, 31.8mm and 34.9mm.

So a frame taking a 27.2mm post might need a 28.6mm or a 31.8mm clamp, depending entirely on how thick its seat tube walls are. Measure the outside of the seat tube with a caliper before ordering a clamp, and never assume the two numbers are related in any fixed way. Clamps are in seatpost clamps.

Setback and offset

Setback is how far the saddle rail cradle sits behind the centreline of the post. It is a fit choice rather than a compatibility one.

Changing setback moves your saddle roughly the same distance fore or aft, which changes your knee position over the pedal. If you are already at the very front or very back of the saddle rails and still not comfortable, a different setback post is the correct fix rather than pushing the rails to their limit. Do not use setback to solve a reach problem. Moving the saddle back to feel less stretched puts your knee in the wrong place over the pedal, and the answer is a shorter stem. See handlebar and stem sizing.

Length and minimum insertion

Posts are commonly 350mm to 400mm, with 400mm covering most riders on most frames.

Every post carries a minimum insertion mark, and that line must sit below the top of the seat tube. Always. It exists because the post is a lever: the further it protrudes, the greater the bending force at the clamp, and a post extended past its mark can snap or split the frame.

If your saddle is at the correct height and the mark is showing, you need a longer post, or the frame is too small for you. On a small frame the opposite problem appears, where a long post bottoms out against a bottle cage bolt inside the seat tube before reaching the right height.

Proprietary and aero seatposts

This is the section to read before assuming any post will fit a modern bike.

A great many current road frames use a frame-specific seatpost with a non-round, aerodynamic profile, clamped internally by a wedge inside the frame rather than by an external collar. These fit one frame family and nothing else, and there is no equivalent of a standard size.

Examples across the bikes we sell: the Merida Reacto uses its own aero post, with the 2027 frame moving to a different one again from the 2026 frame. The Basso Venta R uses a 3B clamp system. Pinarello, Cannondale and Look all have their own.

Three consequences worth planning around:

  • Replacement means the manufacturer's part. If it is damaged or discontinued, there is no generic alternative.
  • Setback options are limited to whatever the brand offers, often only two.
  • Check availability before buying a used frame with a proprietary post, because a missing post can be difficult and expensive to replace.

Dropper posts

A dropper lets you lower the saddle on the move using a bar-mounted lever. Standard on mountain bikes and increasingly common on gravel bikes.

Four things must match: diameter, usually 30.9 or 31.6mm; travel, which is limited by how much post the frame will swallow; routing, internal or external, which the frame decides; and the lever and cable, which must suit your handlebar.

Travel is the one people get wrong. Smaller frames take less travel, and a dropper with more travel than the frame allows simply will not insert far enough to reach your saddle height. Measure your current insertion depth before ordering.

Fitting it safely

  • Clean the seat tube before inserting. Grit inside the tube scores the post and causes slipping.
  • Carbon post or carbon frame: use carbon assembly paste, not grease. The paste increases friction so the clamp holds at lower torque, which is what carbon needs.
  • Alloy post in an alloy or steel frame: use grease or anti-seize. This is not optional in Indian humidity, and it is the difference between a post you can adjust in two years and one that is welded in place.
  • Respect the torque figure printed on the clamp, usually 5 to 7 Nm. A torque wrench costs less than a frame.
  • Mark your height with tape or a marker before removing a post, so you can return to it exactly.

Frequently asked questions

My seatpost keeps slipping. How do I fix it?

Check the diameter first, because a post 0.4mm or more undersized will never hold regardless of clamp force. If the size is correct, clean both the post and the inside of the seat tube thoroughly, since grease on an alloy post in an alloy frame actively encourages slipping and old grit reduces grip. Apply carbon assembly paste, which works on metal posts too, and tighten to the printed torque. Also inspect the clamp itself for a worn or distorted slot. Never solve slipping by exceeding the torque figure.

Can I use a shim to fit a narrower seatpost?

Yes, with a proper machined shim, and it is a legitimate solution rather than a bodge. A 27.2mm post in a 30.9mm frame with a correctly sized shim is common, and it is how riders get the extra comfort of a narrower post on a frame built for a fatter one. Use a full-length shim from a reputable maker rather than a cut piece of tube or a drinks can. What you cannot do is shim in the other direction, since a larger post will not enter a smaller tube.

How do I remove a seized seatpost?

Slowly, and prepare for it to take days rather than minutes. Loosen the clamp fully and remove the bolt, then apply penetrating oil where the post enters the frame and leave it overnight, repeating for several days. Twisting the post with the saddle still attached gives useful leverage. Alloy posts in steel or alloy frames seize through corrosion, which Indian humidity accelerates considerably, and prevention with grease at assembly is far easier than removal. A badly seized post sometimes cannot be saved, so bring the bike in before resorting to force.

Does a carbon seatpost genuinely improve comfort?

Yes, more reliably than most carbon upgrades, because the post is a long lever with a great deal of unsupported length and it is directly beneath you. A carbon post with well-designed flex noticeably reduces road buzz, and the effect is largest on 27.2mm posts with plenty of exposed length. It matters least on a large amount of insertion or a very stiff aero profile. As comfort upgrades go, tyre width and pressure still deliver more per rupee.

Can I cut a seatpost to make it shorter?

An alloy post can be shortened from the bottom, provided you leave enough length that the minimum insertion mark is still meaningful and you deburr the cut edge. It is worth doing only where the post bottoms out inside the frame before reaching your saddle height. A carbon post should not be cut unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it, since the layup and any internal reinforcement are designed around the finished length. Never cut from the top of any post.
