Short answer: a cassette marked 11-32T has an 11 tooth smallest sprocket and a 32 tooth largest. Your easiest gear is the chainring divided by the largest sprocket, and anything below 1.0 will get most riders up most Indian gradients. Two hard limits decide what you can actually fit: the freehub on your wheel, and the maximum sprocket your rear derailleur can handle.

Reading the numbers
A cassette is described by its speed count and its tooth range. An 11-speed 11-32T has eleven sprockets, the smallest with 11 teeth and the largest with 32.
- The small sprocket sets your top gear. Smaller means a higher gear for descending and flat speed.
- The large sprocket sets your bottom gear. Larger means an easier gear for climbing.

Gear ratio, and what it means on a climb
Divide the chainring teeth by the sprocket teeth. A 34 tooth chainring with a 34 tooth sprocket gives a ratio of 1.0, meaning the wheel turns once for each turn of the cranks.
Lower is easier. This single number is the most useful way to compare bikes, because it lets you compare a 1x commuter against a 2x road bike directly.

As a working guide for riders here: 1.0 or below is where climbing becomes comfortable rather than a fight. Above 1.2 you need either good fitness or fairly flat roads.
The honest test is simpler than any calculation. If you cannot hold roughly 60 revolutions per minute on your steepest regular climb, your bottom gear is too high. Grinding at 40rpm is how knees get injured, and no amount of training makes an unsuitable gear appropriate.
Range against steps
Every cassette trades these against each other, and you cannot have both.

More sprockets is how manufacturers escape the trade: a 12-speed 11-34 has the same range as an 11-speed 11-34 with an extra sprocket filling a gap. That is the actual benefit of higher speed counts, not the number itself.
For almost everyone riding in India who is not racing on flat roads, take the range. A gap you notice occasionally is a smaller problem than a climb you cannot ride.
Freehub compatibility, the first hard limit
The cassette mounts to a freehub body on the rear wheel, and not every cassette fits every freehub. This catches people when upgrading.

The rule that matters: a cassette with a 10 tooth smallest sprocket cannot fit an HG freehub. There is no adapter, because a 10 tooth sprocket is physically smaller than the freehub body it would have to sit over. This means a SRAM 10-36 or 10-44 cassette needs an XDR driver, and fitting one to an HG wheel means changing the freehub body or the whole wheel.
Going the other way is easier. A 10-speed cassette fits an 11-speed HG body using a 1.85mm spacer. Shimano 12-speed road cassettes fit the same 11-speed road freehub, which is unusually generous of them.

Derailleur capacity, the second hard limit
Even with the right freehub, the rear derailleur has to physically reach the largest sprocket and take up the slack chain.
Maximum sprocket size is published for every derailleur. A short cage road derailleur commonly tops out around 30 to 34 teeth. Fitting a larger cassette than the derailleur allows means the upper jockey wheel fouls the sprocket, and in the worst case the derailleur is pulled into the wheel.
Total capacity matters on a double chainset. Add the difference between your chainrings to the difference between your smallest and largest sprockets. A 50-34 with an 11-32 needs a capacity of 16 plus 21, which is 37. If the derailleur is rated below that, the chain will be slack in small-small and over-tight in big-big.
Many derailleurs handle a slightly larger sprocket than published, but the published figure is where the warranty and the safety margin sit. Check it before ordering.
Choosing for Indian gradients
Indian climbing tends to be short and steep rather than long and steady. Ghat sections, flyovers and village roads regularly hit 10 percent or more without warning, and the gradient signage that helps in the Alps does not exist.

Two practical notes. There is no prize for a narrow cassette, and nobody watching can tell. And if you are choosing between a lighter cassette and a wider one at the same price, take the wider one: the weight difference is a few grams and the gear you actually need is worth far more.

Upgrades that actually work
If your bottom gear is too high, there are three routes, in order of cost and disruption.
- A larger cassette. Cheapest and simplest, provided the derailleur allows it and the freehub matches. Going from 11-28 to 11-32 on a 34 tooth inner ring takes your easiest ratio from 1.21 to 1.06, which is a real difference on a climb.
- A smaller inner chainring. Moving from a 50-34 to a 46-30 lowers every gear. Check the chainring bolt circle diameter and that the front derailleur can be set low enough.
- Both, or a different groupset. Where the frame and drivetrain simply were not designed for the terrain.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a new chain when I fit a new cassette?
Almost always, yes. A worn chain has stretched slightly and has worn matching hollows into the old cassette's teeth. Put that chain on fresh sprockets and it will skip under load, usually in the gears you use most. Put a new chain on a worn cassette and you get the same skipping. The exception is if the chain is genuinely new, under a few hundred kilometres, in which case it can carry over. Also check your chainrings, since they wear too and are the thing people forget.
Will a 12-speed cassette fit my 11-speed wheel?
It depends entirely on the brand. Shimano 12-speed road cassettes fit the existing 11-speed road freehub, so an upgrade needs no new wheel. SRAM 12-speed road cassettes with a 10 tooth smallest sprocket need an XDR driver body, which an 11-speed HG wheel does not have. Some wheels allow the freehub body to be swapped, which is far cheaper than a new wheel, so check what your hub supports before assuming either outcome.
Is 1x or 2x better for Indian riding?
2x for road riding, 1x for commuting and gravel. A double gives closer steps between gears and a wider total range, which matters when you are trying to hold a steady cadence in a group. A single ring removes the front derailleur entirely, which means one less thing to adjust, no chain drop and simpler shifting in traffic. Modern wide cassettes mean 1x is no longer short of climbing gears; what it lacks is fineness between them.
What is the difference between a cassette and a freewheel?
A cassette is a stack of separate sprockets that slides onto a freehub body, with the ratchet mechanism built into the wheel hub. A freewheel is a single threaded unit containing both the sprockets and the ratchet, which screws onto the hub. Freewheels are found on older and entry-level bikes, usually 6 or 7-speed. They are not interchangeable: a freewheel hub cannot take a cassette without changing the wheel. Check which you have before ordering, since the two look similar at a glance.
How do I know if my cassette is worn out?
The clearest sign is a brand new chain skipping under load on the sprockets you use most, which means the teeth have worn to match the old stretched chain. Visually, worn teeth develop an asymmetric hooked or shark-fin profile rather than a symmetrical shape, most obvious on the middle sprockets. Cassettes typically outlast two to three chains if the chains are replaced on time, which is the strongest argument for measuring chain wear rather than waiting for symptoms.
