Wheel-on or direct drive?

Wheel-on trainers press a roller against your rear tyre. They cost less and are quicker to mount, which suits a first season of indoor riding. Direct-drive units replace the rear wheel entirely, so there is no tyre wear, no slip under hard efforts and noticeably better power accuracy, which matters if you ride indoors regularly or train with power.

What do you actually need for Zwift?

Most trainers will connect to Zwift, but only smart trainers let the app control resistance so gradients feel real. Look for FE-C or FTMS support, a simulated gradient of 15 per cent or more, and power accuracy of around 2 to 3 per cent for structured training and racing. Basic wheel-on units broadcast speed and estimated power but will not change resistance for you, so climbs are done by shifting gears.

Does your cassette and axle fit?

Direct-drive trainers need a cassette fitted to the freehub, and the freehub standard has to match your groupset. A standard HG body covers Shimano and SRAM 8 to 11-speed and Shimano 12-speed road, while SRAM 12-speed road needs an XDR body and most 12-speed MTB cassettes need an XD or Microspline body. Some trainers ship with a cassette fitted and others do not. Most accept 130 and 135 mm quick release plus 12x142 and 12x148 mm thru-axle, sometimes with adapters. Check your rear hub spacing before ordering.

When is a smart bike worth it?

A smart bike removes your bicycle from the equation entirely. It makes sense if you train indoors most of the year, share the setup between riders of different sizes, or want to leave your road bike untouched and ready to ride outside. For most riders, a good direct-drive smart trainer delivers the same training value for far less.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which indoor trainer is best for Zwift in India?

Any smart trainer that supports FE-C or FTMS will run Zwift with full resistance control. For the most realistic experience, look for a direct-drive unit with at least 15 per cent simulated gradient, power accuracy of around 2 to 3 per cent and enough maximum power for your sprints. Wheel-on smart trainers also work and cost less, but feel less realistic.

What is the difference between a wheel-on and a direct-drive trainer?

A wheel-on trainer drives a roller off your rear tyre, while a direct-drive trainer replaces the rear wheel and takes a cassette. Direct drive is quieter, more accurate and causes no tyre wear, which matters if you ride indoors regularly. Wheel-on units cost far less and are faster to set up and pack away, making them a good starting point.

Do I need a separate cassette for a direct-drive trainer?

Usually yes, and it must match your drivetrain speed and freehub standard. Some direct-drive trainers ship with a cassette already fitted, so check the product page. A standard HG freehub works for Shimano and SRAM 8 to 11-speed, while SRAM 12-speed road needs an XDR body, which is often sold separately. Using the same cassette as your bike keeps shifting consistent.

How noisy is an indoor trainer in a flat?

Direct-drive trainers are quiet enough for a shared flat, with good units running at around conversation level. Most of what a neighbour hears is drivetrain noise and vibration through the floor rather than the trainer itself. A training mat under the unit reduces the transmitted noise, and a clean, well-lubricated chain keeps the drivetrain quieter too.

Will an indoor trainer fit a thru-axle bike?

Yes, most modern trainers include adapters for 130 and 135 mm quick release as well as 12x142 and 12x148 mm thru-axle, and separate adapter kits are available where they are not included. Confirm your rear hub spacing and axle type, and check the product page for which adapters come in the box, before ordering.
