Squirt

(2 products)

Squirt is a South African brand that covers two practical needs for cyclists: drivetrain lubrication and protection against chafing. Its wax emulsion chain lube keeps chains running quietly while staying clean, and its anti-chafe balm looks after the rider on long days. Detailed application instructions and sizes are shown on each product page.

Chain lubrication or protection against chafing?

The two Squirt products serve completely different purposes. Squirt chain lube is a wax-and-water emulsion for bicycle chains, designed to lubricate the drivetrain while remaining relatively clean because dirt does not readily stick to the dried wax. The anti-chafe balm is for the rider rather than the bike. Its lanolin-based formula forms a water-resistant layer on the skin to help protect areas prone to rubbing and irritation during long rides.

Which bottle size suits you?

A small bottle of Squirt chain lube makes sense as a compact quantity to carry, or when you want to try wax lube before committing to a larger bottle. A larger bottle is the more practical choice for regular drivetrain maintenance, and frequent riders will quickly find a small bottle limiting.

Which Squirt product do I need?

Choose the chain lube if your requirement is drivetrain lubrication. It should be applied to a dry chain, and chains previously treated with conventional oils or lubricants should be thoroughly degreased before switching. Choose the anti-chafe balm if your problem is skin irritation or chafing around areas such as the sit bones, inner thighs or underarms. It can also be used for running, triathlon and open-water swimming and is neoprene friendly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Squirt Chain Lube used for?

Squirt Chain Lube is a wax-based bicycle chain lubricant designed to lubricate the drivetrain while helping the chain remain relatively clean. It uses waxes suspended in a water emulsion, which dries after application. Dirt does not readily stick to the dried lubricant, making it different from conventional wet or oil-based chain lubricants.

Do I need to degrease my chain before using Squirt Lube?

Yes, a new chain or a chain previously treated with another oil or lubricant should be thoroughly degreased before applying Squirt Chain Lube. The product instructions specify removing the existing lubricant, cleaning away the degreaser and allowing the chain to dry before application. A chain already being maintained with Squirt does not require this complete initial preparation each time.

How often should I apply Squirt Chain Lube?

Squirt recommends approximately every four hours of MTB riding and six hours of road riding as a general guideline, although actual intervals depend on riding conditions. The brand also recommends applying the lubricant after a ride so it can dry before the next one, particularly when preparing for wet riding conditions.

What is Squirt anti-chafe balm used for?

Squirt's anti-chafe balm is a lanolin-based product designed to protect skin from rubbing and irritation during cycling and other endurance sports. It forms a water-resistant microfilm on the skin and can be applied to areas such as the sit bones, inner thighs and underarms before activity rather than being applied directly to the chamois pad.

Can Squirt anti-chafe balm be used for triathlon and swimming?

Yes, Squirt's anti-chafe balm is neoprene friendly and can be used for triathlon and open-water swimming. It can be applied around the neck, shoulders and underarms before putting on a wetsuit to reduce rubbing. The same product is also suitable for cycling, running and other endurance activities where repeated movement can cause skin irritation.
