Quai R45 Carbon Wheelset Review: Value Performance Upgrade

I recently had the opportunity to test the Quai R45 Rim Brake wheels and had a few questions in mind as I put them through their paces. How would they perform when braking? Would they feel stable at high speeds? How would they handle on climbs versus flat roads?

The R45s are a 45mm-deep carbon clincher wheelset. At this depth, they offer a solid balance between aerodynamic efficiency on the flats and reasonable weight for climbing. The rim profile is wide enough to pair well with modern 25c–28c tyres, giving you a smooth contact patch and predictable handling.

On the road, the first thing I noticed was the acceleration — noticeably quicker than the alloy wheels they replaced. The carbon layup feels stiff under sprinting loads without being harsh over rough surfaces. At speed, the deeper profile provides a satisfying stability that inspires confidence, especially in crosswinds where some deeper wheels can feel sketchy.

Braking on carbon rim brake surfaces has historically been a concern, but the Quai R45s performed well with the correct brake pads. Modulation was predictable, and heat buildup on long descents was manageable. That said, if you're doing heavy mountain riding, disc brakes remain the gold standard.

For the price point, the Quai R45s offer excellent value — a genuine performance upgrade over stock alloy wheels without the sticker shock of premium brands. They're a smart choice for riders who want to feel the carbon wheel difference without overcommitting on budget.
