Riding with earbuds in Indian traffic is a bad idea, and most riders know it. Bone conduction headphones solve that specific problem: they sit on your cheekbones rather than in your ears, so your ear canals stay completely open and you hear the auto rickshaw behind you as clearly as you would with nothing on at all. How bone conduction works
Conventional headphones push air into your ear canal. Bone conduction transducers rest on the bone just in front of your ear and vibrate, sending sound through your skull directly to the inner ear. Your eardrum is bypassed entirely.
The consequence is the whole point: your ears remain completely open. You are not relying on a transparency mode or a microphone passing outside sound through to you. Nothing is blocking your ears in the first place.
For riding in India that matters more than it does almost anywhere else. Horns, engines, a rider calling a hazard on a group ride, a dog you have not seen yet. Earbuds remove all of that. These do not.
The honest trade-off is bass. Sound reaching you through bone carries less low frequency than sound pushed into a sealed ear canal. Recent generations have narrowed the gap considerably, but if audiophile quality is your priority, this is not the technology for you.

The OpenRun Pro 2 is the current flagship, using 10th generation bone conduction with DualPitch, Bluetooth 5.3, and a five minute charge that returns two and a half hours of listening. It is also the lightest to live with, because it charges over ordinary USB-C.
One model to avoid. The older OpenRun Pro is still listed at ₹19,999, which is more than the newer Pro 2 at ₹18,499. It uses the previous generation transducer, has ten hours of battery instead of twelve, an older Bluetooth version, and a proprietary magnetic charger. There is no scenario in which it is the better buy today. We have one left and we would rather tell you that than sell it to you.
S820 or S821: a size question, not a spec question
This is the single most common confusion in the range, and it is understandable, because both are called OpenRun Pro 2 and both cost ₹18,499.
The specifications are identical. Same 12 hour battery, same IP55 rating, same 10th generation transducer, same 30.3g weight.
The difference is the headband. The S821 is the Mini, with a band roughly 21mm shorter than standard. That is it.
- Choose the standard S820 if the band on a demo pair sits comfortably around the back of your head without pressure, and if you wear a helmet with a bulky rear retention cradle.
- Choose the Mini S821 if standard sports headphones tend to feel loose on you, slip when you turn your head, or sit too low at the back of the neck. Smaller heads, and many women, fit the Mini better.
Try both if you can. Come to our Kondapur store, put both on, and the answer takes fifteen seconds. A band that is too long bounces on rough roads and a band that is too short applies constant pressure on a long ride.
Water resistance, and why the cheaper model wins
The IP numbers are worth decoding, because the ranking here is not the price ranking.

The ₹13,499 OpenRun is more water resistant than the ₹18,499 OpenRun Pro 2. That is not a mistake in the table. If you ride through the monsoon regularly and the flagship's extra battery and newer transducer do not excite you, the OpenRun is arguably the more sensible purchase for Indian conditions.
IP55 handles sweat and rain perfectly well. What it does not handle is submersion, which for a cyclist is rarely the question.
Swimming needs a different product entirely
If you swim, none of the above will do, and the reason is not water resistance.
Bluetooth does not travel through water. Your phone on the pool deck cannot maintain a connection to a device underwater, so any headphone relying on Bluetooth is silent the moment you push off.

Living with them here
- Check the charging port before you buy. The OpenRun Pro 2 and OpenMove use ordinary USB-C, so any cable works. The OpenRun and OpenSwim Pro use a proprietary magnetic connector, and losing it means a ₹1,499 replacement cable rather than borrowing one. Worth knowing before a trip.
- Dry the contacts before charging. Same rule as any device here: sweat and monsoon water across charging contacts corrode them. The magnetic chargers include moisture detection and will refuse to charge and beep at you, which is helpful rather than faulty.
- Sweat is the main enemy, not rain. Wipe the transducers and the band down after hot rides. Salt degrades the silicone over time.
- Volume discipline in traffic. Open ears only help if the music is not drowning everything out. On busy roads, keep it low enough that you can hold a conversation. Podcasts at low volume work better than music for this.
Frequently asked questions
Can you actually hear traffic with music playing?
Yes, and this is the genuine advantage over earbuds with a transparency mode. Nothing physically blocks your ear canal, so outside sound reaches you exactly as it would with nothing on, while the music arrives separately through your cheekbone. The limit is volume: at maximum volume in heavy traffic the music will mask quieter sounds, just as loud music in a car does. At moderate volume you will hear a horn, a shout or a vehicle behind you clearly.
Do they leak sound to people nearby?
A little, and more at higher volumes. Someone standing beside you in a quiet room will hear a faint tinny version of what you are listening to, similar to open-backed headphones. Outdoors, in traffic, or on a moving bike, this is a non-issue because ambient noise covers it entirely. In a quiet office or a library it is noticeable enough that you would want the volume low. It is not loud enough to disturb someone a few metres away.
Do they work with a cycling helmet and sunglasses?
Yes, and this is where band size matters. The band passes around the back of your head below the helmet's retention cradle, so most helmets are fine, though a bulky rear cradle can push against a standard band. The arms rest above your ears and sit alongside sunglasses arms without conflict, since nothing goes in or over the ear. If you find pressure where the band meets the helmet, the Mini size usually resolves it.
Are headphones allowed in races and organised events?
Frequently not, so check the rules before your event rather than on the start line. Many triathlons and road races prohibit headphones of any type for safety and fairness, and some specifically exclude bone conduction despite the open-ear design. Where they are permitted, it is often only on the run leg. This has no bearing on training use, but it is worth knowing if you were buying a pair specifically for a race.
How does the sound compare with regular earbuds?
Clearly worse for bass, comparable for mids and vocals, and better for everything about awareness. Sound conducted through bone cannot move air the way a sealed ear canal does, so deep bass is the compromise. The recent generations have improved this noticeably, and the difference is smallest with podcasts and audiobooks and largest with bass-heavy music. If you want one pair for riding and for listening at home, be realistic: these are excellent for the first job and ordinary for the second.
