What does a home mechanic actually need?

For adjusting a derailleur, swapping a saddle and keeping bolts at the right torque, a hex set plus a torque wrench covers most of it. The IceToolz 36Q1 ball-ended 4 to 6 mm set is ₹690 and the 70Ta T-type set ₹990. Step up to a boxed kit when you start doing your own cable and bearing work: the IceToolz 801A zipper kit is ₹2,450 and the 82A6 Pronto kit ₹10,290.

Hex keys, T-bars or a bit set?

L-shaped hex keys are cheapest and reach awkward bolts, but you cannot apply much controlled force. T-bar handles spin faster and let you feel the torque, which is why workshops use them: the Birzman T-bar hex set of eight is ₹8,890. A bit and socket set is the most versatile if you also work on components with Torx fittings, and the Pedros Pro 31-piece set is ₹7,100.

Do not skip the torque wrench

Carbon components and alloy bolts are where guesswork gets expensive. Most stem, seatpost and chainring bolts are specified between 4 and 6 Nm, which is far less than it feels like by hand. The Alligator torque wrench set with magnetic bits is ₹9,890 and is the single tool that prevents the most costly mistakes. Torque figures are printed on most carbon parts themselves.

When does a workshop kit make sense?

Unior's professional range is built for shops and serious home workshops: the 1600A5 13-piece set in a bag is ₹4,633, while the full carriages and benches run from ₹1,80,720 for the 2600CW-TR shared bench to ₹8,37,634 for the 2600C-US master workbench. These are a different category of purchase, aimed at people servicing bikes daily rather than maintaining one or two.

Frequently Asked Questions

What tools do I need to start maintaining my own bike?

A ball-ended hex set, a torque wrench and a chain tool cover the majority of home jobs. The IceToolz 36Q1 hex set at ₹690 handles the 4, 5 and 6 mm bolts that make up most of a bike, and a torque wrench prevents the overtightening that damages carbon parts. Add tyre levers and a floor pump and you can handle routine work.

Do I really need a torque wrench for a bike?

Yes, if you own anything carbon. Stem, seatpost and handlebar bolts are typically specified at 4 to 6 Nm, which is much lighter than most people apply by hand, and overtightening a carbon bar or post can crack it. The Alligator torque wrench set at ₹9,890 covers the common range and pays for itself the first time it prevents damage.

What is the difference between a hex key set and a T-bar set?

L-shaped hex keys give you reach into tight spaces and cost very little, starting at ₹690 here. T-bar handles let you spin a bolt quickly and give much better feel for how much force you are applying, which is why professional mechanics prefer them. The Birzman eight-piece T-bar set is ₹8,890 and suits someone working on bikes regularly.

Are Unior workshop kits worth it for a home mechanic?

For most home mechanics, no. The Unior carriages and workbenches run from ₹1,80,720 to ₹8,37,634 and are built for shops servicing bikes every day. The more sensible Unior option at home is the 1600A5 13-piece set in a bag at ₹4,633. Buy a workshop system only if you are running a service business or maintaining a large fleet.

Which tool kit suits both road and mountain bikes?

A general kit with hex, Torx and cassette tools will cover both, since the fasteners are largely shared. The IceToolz 82A6 Pronto kit at ₹10,290 and the 82F4 Essence kit at ₹9,290 both span the common jobs on either type. Suspension service on a mountain bike needs brand-specific tools that no general kit includes, so check your fork's requirements separately.
